Shui for cello and piano (2003), ca. 13’
Although the title of this piece Shui (Water) suggests water-like imagery (as can be heard in the opening piano figure in movement I), it serves as a point of departure for a more abstract study in continuity. There are three movements with a total duration of 13 minutes. While all movements have distinct, contrasting characters, the materials are interconnected. Shui is from a series of pieces that focus on the integration of Western compositional techniques with Chinese sound qualities.
Shui is dedicated to Jeanne and Norman Fischer and premiered by the Fischer Duo.
